History of America: How the seed industry helped our growing country

The Landreth Seed Company

The Landreth Seed Company is the oldest seed company in America. It was started in 1784 by David Landreth. At one time, other seed companies sent their personnel to Landreths to be taught how to grow and save seeds.

The web site offers a lot of different information. It is informational to view the catalog. You will find how Heirloom varieties developed. It also gives information on the impact the slave trade had on the industry and what seeds were brought over from Africa. The site is very informative from a historical and gardening point-of-view.

The web site also offers a newsletter that you can find in the Gardener's Resource Library archive section.  There you will find "How To" instructions.  The site also includes historical data from 1784-1890 about what was happening in the country and how important the seed industry was in our growing country.  Some of the varieties they still offer were grown at Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's home estate.

Heirloom gardening at the Library

 New Blog from the Library

Heirloom Gardening at the Library

Foster Libraries will be having their Heirloom and Rare Plant Sale again this year. It will be held on Saturday May28 9:00am - 1:00am, and Monday May 30 8:00am - 12:00pm. This is Memorial Day Weekend.  Stop by and see us before or after the parade. Some favorite from last year will be back as well as many new varieties.  We want to make this season a success, and also a fun experience for all. This blog will offer different types of information relating to gardening.  Some of the information covered will be:  Gardening tips , The History of the Seed Industry , (and how important it was to the development of this country),  Dealing with Garden Pests, (including web sights to help identify your insect), and much more.  We will be post a list all of the plants that will be for sale with a write up about each one, and how to grow then, for the new comers . Check the library blog for updates. Anyone interested in helping with this project, please contact Kris at the library.
